Where two houses meet,
Maison Brijean was born.

Since 1895, a kimono house has cherished the textiles of Japan. Since 1966, a couture house in Himeji has refined the European art of pattern-making and tailoring. Maison Brijean was born where these two traditions meet. We regard silk kimono as one of the world's finest textiles, and from it we create couture that exists only once in the world.

What we do

Three ways to encounter kimono textiles

Experiences

Centred on NUNO Kintsugi, three experiences with genuine kimono and obi that bring you close to Japanese aesthetics and craftsmanship. Held at our salon, a ten-minute walk from Himeji Castle, or at a place of your choice.

Couture

Jackets, coats and capes tailored from carefully selected silk kimono, with European pattern-making and tailoring. Every piece is one of a kind. We deliver worldwide.

KIMONO COMPRESSION: kimono fabric compressed into countless pin tucks

Art Collection

Large panels in which the fabric of an entire kimono is compressed into countless pin tucks. Light and shadow dwell in their sculptural relief. Artworks by Rieko Kitahara.

From kimono to couture

How one kimono becomes
one couture piece

To admire, to touch and reflect, to reconstruct — and to inherit.

Admire

Dyed and woven by artisans, a kimono may have spent decades at someone's side. In each colour and pattern live Japanese aesthetics and human memory.

Touch & Reflect

In our NUNO Kintsugi experience, stains and marks on the fabric are neither erased nor hidden. With gold, they are embraced anew as part of its character. Touching the fabric with your own hands, you reflect on the time it has lived — a truly special moment.

Reconstruct

We set aside, for a moment, that it was once a kimono, and meet it simply as a textile. With European pattern-making and tailoring, we give it a new form — as couture to be worn, or as art to grace a space.

Inherit

Born into a kimono merchant family founded in 1895, the mother married into a couture house and has connected the two ever since. The daughter studied in Paris, then honed her craft at the salon founded by her grandmother. In mother and daughter, the histories of two houses meet — and so Maison Brijean was born. We carry this spirit forward, to the next generation and to the world.
